Potassium thioacetate reacts with alkylating agents (e. g. halogenated hydrocarbons) to give thioacetates, which hydrolyze to give thiols:
CH3COSK RX → CH3COSR KX (X = Halogen)

Preparation method
The preparation method of potassium thioacetate is as follows:
Diketene and sodium polysulfide are used to hermetically introduce hydrogen sulfide gas into an anhydrous alcohol solvent, add an antioxidant, and after the sulfur is completed, rectify to obtain thioacetic acid and anhydrous alcohol solvent; add thioacetic acid or its mixture with anhydrous alcohol solvent dropwise into the anhydrous alcohol solvent of potassium hydroxide, after dropping, stir, and recover the anhydrous alcohol solvent under reduced pressure. The precipitated white crystal is potassium thioacetate. The antioxidant is dibutyl hydroxytoluene, butyl anisole or tert-butyl hydroquinone.
